For the past 15 years, we’ve brought Tim in every five years to guide our strategic planning process.  He has become an essential part of how we do this work. He has a rare ability to listen deeply, connect with people, and capture the heart of what we’re saying. As we talk, he creates a live drawing that reflects our values, our mission, and the work we’re committed to.  He is truly amazing how we keep talking and he just seems to be able to capture it in a drawing.

Tim has led several strategic planning retreats for me with small and large teams. He invests the time upfront in the planning of these sessions to ensure we get through our objectives and desired outcomes.

I am happy to share my experience over the past few months working with Tim on the strategic plan for Life Works.  Life Works is a nonprofit organization providing support to people with Developmental Disabilities.  We are the Arc of Cowlitz County and employ about 300 people.

Tim worked with numerous stakeholder groups (Board, Leadership, Staff, Funders, Clients, and Families of Clients) facilitating listening sessions that focused on where our field has been, where our organization has been, where we are now, and most importantly where we should be going.  Conducting these sessions with over 60 participants, I have observed Tim’s strength in setting an inclusive environment, facilitation, active listening, patience, and helping participants to think beyond their immediate paradigm to strategize a path forward.  It hasn’t been easy at all points, and Tim acknowledges to different participants that this is a natural part of the process.  We have trusted the process, and we are arriving at a point where the board and our leadership are sensing alignment, common vision, and optimism for an implementation strategy.  Throughout the process, Tim has stressed that engagement in the early steps helps to facilitate investment in the overall plan at implementation steps.  This is proving to be a reality for our organization.

For me personally, as the Executive Director, I learned more than I anticipated by being present at the listening sessions.  Through the process that Tim facilitated, I gained a better understanding of our employees’ experience in the community, as well as a better understanding of the experience of the people we support in the community.

Tim had to untangle a lot of information when he first started this process and I would say it took two or three meetings prior to the listening sessions for us to really establish a clear understanding of everything we are doing and what we were looking for in a strategic planning process.  Without this time invested up front, I don’t believe we would have entered the listening sessions as prepared to engage participants as well as he did.  It was time well spent.

My first encounter with Tim was in connection with the Seattle University Executive Leadership Program, where Tim captured my final presentation. His work allowed me to see how my values statement appeared from the outside in. It was true to what I said, and seeing it captured in his artwork made it more real. He doesn’t know this, but his capture was displayed in my home for a great many years and I often went back to it as a reminder and an inspiration. It only came down when I retired. Later Tim worked with me as a coach, and again the process he used uncovered possibilities for future growth. It gave me the courage to try new things and to experiment with new directions in my work. And while I chose to stay with my career, the bigger view that our work together inspired made me much better at it, and much happier for it.
